ICGEB South African HDI Programme CRP awards

Ten research grants have been awarded within the ICGEB Special Programme with South African Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs), in partnership with the South African Department of Science and Innovation (DSI).

Welcoming this partnership with DSI, the ICGEB recognizes the need to support capacity development and build synergies with HDIs. Through the provision of research grants focusing on cooperation on common areas of joint scientific interest and expertise, the goal is to promote collaboration, train young scientists and also the development of research facilities at the HDIs.

The awarded grants, distributed across six HDIs are spread amongst the research areas of human health, agriculture and biofuels. Awarded HDIs include: University of Fort Hare, University of Limpopo, Walter Sisulu University, University of Venda, Mangosuthu University of Technology and the University of the Western Cape. Collaborations have been established with all three ICGEB Components: Cape Town, Trieste, and New Delhi, with collaborative research well underway.

This Special Programme offers unique opportunities for specialisation and cooperation across South Africa with the global ICGEB, facilitating a clear and accessible path for HDIs to work closely with ICGEB researchers in capacity building and the training of South African scientists in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology
