Communicating with a brain worm

Host: L. Banks

The larvae of Taenia solium, a parasitic platyhelminth endemic in some regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia, can lodge in the human brain and cause a range of neurological symptoms called neurocysticercosis.
The talk presents experiments using naturally infected pigs, treated with anthelmintic and anti-inflammatory drugs, and some recent approaches to study the metamorphosis of the larvae into an intestinal worm.
