ICGEB participated in the launch of South Africa National Science Week (NSW) 2024, at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
The launch of NSW 2024 took place on Saturday, 28th of September 2024 at the Central University of Technology, and will run from 30 September 2024 to 6 October 2024, under the theme “Living in a high-tech world: should we be concerned?”, encouraging learners to explore advanced technology and innovation, as well as its impact of on society and everyday life.
At this year’s launch, ICGEB researchers, Humaira Lambarey (Virology – Emerging Viruses) and Dupe Ojo (Bioinformatics) ran a hands-on Foldscope workshop, bringing the ‘magic’ of the paper microscope to the exhibition, with more than 1,000 learners, their life sciences teachers, and the public. ICGEB also donated Foldscopes to various science teachers, to be used as an educational resource tool within the classroom and outdoors.
Officially opening the Launch, South African Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr. Blade Nzimande, highlighted the importance of National Science Week, science for the future, and encouraging learners to consider a career in STEM.
Celebrating NSW, ICGEB Cape Town will host Manenberg High School as part of the ICGEB School Outreach Programme.
