LaserNET Project – First patients treated with laser therapy in Serbian hospitals

LaserNET is an ICGEB project funded by the FVG Region and headed by Cardiovascular Biology Group Leader, Serena Zacchigna, that aims to promote the use of laser therapy for the treatment of oral and skin lesions induced by chemo and radiotherapy in adult and pediatric cancer patients in Serbia, through the donation of devices and specialised training.

On 29-30 October 2019, a training session on laser treatment of the side effects of cancer therapies was held in Belgrade. Doctors and nurses from the Klinicki Centar Serbije, IORS and from the University Children’s Hospital were trained in the use of this technology, which was new for the country and recommended by the MASCC guidelines.

The first patients, two adults and one pediatric patient were treated, with the support of Italian experts. The training followed the donation of three laser devices to the hospitals involved as part of the project “LaserNET – Support to the introduction of laser therapy as a treatment of oral mucositis/stomatitis/dermatitis in the cancer patient in Serbia”, funded under the contribution of the FVG Region and led by the ICGEB Trieste.
