Women in Information and Communication Technologies

On the recurrence of the International Girls in ICT Day, a global initiative that takes place every year on the 4th Thursday of April, ICGEB joins in posting about the importance of empowering girls in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Through dedicated programmes (WE STAR, EMPOWER, the South African Women in Biotechnology Programme, MSCA Fellowships, IILA), ICGEB encourages young women to pursue careers in Science and Technology (as part of STEM). In addition, it promotes courses and seminars to strengthen complementary soft skills, such as science communication, writing skills, knowledge of intellectual property rights, digital sequencing information, in vivo research ethics and biosafety.

Amongst our many women scientists, Dr. Diana Eva Bedolla Orozco is recipient of a Marie Sklodowska Curie MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship who will be joining ICGEB as part of a global project to study frontotemporal dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases through vibrational spectroscopy, and to improve dementia diagnostics.

A graduate in physics from the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos in Mexico, Dr. Bedolla Orozco holds a Master’s degree in modelling and simulation of complex systems from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and a doctorate in neuroscience from the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA), Trieste. She is a multidisciplinary researcher, whose publications cover topics from physical science and synchrotron to biomedicine, via analytical chemistry, chemometrics and polymer science. She is specialised in the emerging field of biospectroscopy and is involved in point-of-care diagnostics.

This week she also received the 2022 “Mexicanos Distinguidos” award from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME). Dr. Bedolla Orozco receives the award for her career in the fields of science and technology to promote and encourage women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers (STEM).

A story that is truly inspirational; digital skills for life.
