ICGEB & AICAD Outreach – Foldscope workshop

Further to the signing of the MoU between ICGEB and the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) in August 2023, the first virtual training workshop on the use of the Foldscope for outreach activities was hosted by the Cape Town Component last week.

Following the donation of fifty Foldscopes from ICGEB Cape Town to AICAD in Nairobi, Kenya, ICGEB Cape Town coordinated a two-day virtual practical workshop on outreach, focusing on the Foldscope, on 8 – 9 February 2024.

The training aimed to introduce AICAD researchers to the basic principles of the Foldscope, how to assemble it, using it in the classroom setting as well as outdoors, and it’s benefit as an educational resource tool. Commencing with the Kenyan team, the plan is for the ICGEB training to extend to other AICAD country teams.

“Foldscope isn’t just a microscope; it’s a gateway to scientific exploration. Through the partnership between ICGEB and AICAD, this Foldscope training will unlock a future where young minds across Eastern Africa region become the architects of innovation and solutions to global challenges.” John Kinyuru, Deputy Executive Director & Head of Programmes, AICAD
ICGEB AICAD Outreach Partnership – Foldscope workshop

The Foldscopes will be a key resource tool of AICAD’s Outreach Program for primary schools in Kenya, focusing on innovative gardening. AICAD will expand the school outreach program to Tanzania and Uganda in the near future.

The ICGEB AICAD partnership is based on a framework for cooperation in science, education and technology, which facilitates and strengthens the collaboration between the two organisations in fields of common interest such as emerging technologies, biotechnology and life sciences, to the benefit of the common member countries.
