Bachground
The R programming language – an efficient, open-source data analysis and visualization tool – can significantly enhance bioinformatics research. With its easy access and strong community support, R benefits researchers and students in low-resource environments. Bioinformatics is a complex field that requires expertise in mathematical sciences, computer science, biological sciences, and engineering, along with essential infrastructure, such as efficient computing facilities and high-speed internet. While many bioinformatics methods rely on user-friendly web-based tools, these can struggle in resource-limited settings due to connectivity issues, computing power limitations, and a lack of skilled personnel. In South Africa, institutions that were marginalized during apartheid often continue to face challenges in research capacity due to insufficient funding. This workshop aims to equip participants with essential skills in R for bioinformatics applications, enabling them to conduct research and contribute to scientific advancements.
Purpose
The primary objectives of the workshop are:
a. To introduce the basics of R programming and its applications in bioinformatics.
b. To confer skills to analyse and visualise biological data using R to participants.
c. To provide hands-on experience with real-world bioinformatics datasets.
d. To develop a collaborative learning environment and establish a network of bioinformatics practitioners in low-resource settings.
Targeted audience
The workshop is designed for postgraduate students and scholars with research interests that can be addressed by bioinformatics and computational biology skills but have limited exposure to the relevant training. Knowledge of R is not mandatory but will be helpful.
Funding: A limited number of grants to cover the accommodation (twin share) for the event and waive the Registration Fee will be available for students and junior scientists from selected institutions in South Africa.
