26-27 September 2025: Come and meet ICGEB scientists who will be at multiple events during the Trieste Next Festival.
This September, ICGEB renews its participation in the Trieste Next Festival of Scientific Research, offering the public a variety of opportunities for engagement.
Friday, 26 September
📌 09:00–12:00: Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste, ICGEB Stand,. School groups will be hosted, together with IRCCS Children’s Hospital “Burlo Garofolo”, at the Gazebo in the main square of Trieste. ICGEB will be running the workshop entitled: “Science that illuminates: a journey towards a future between genetics and fluorescence.”
The activity includes an interactive lesson led by researchers from the IRCCS Children’s Hospital “Burlo Garofolo” on genetics and personalised medicine who will demonstrate how genetic variants affect both disease and individual responses to medication. ICGEB will introduce students to fluorescent proteins, highlighting their key role in scientific and biomedical research. Using a fluorescence microscope, participants will observe fluorescent bacteria and explore the location of proteins within eukaryotic cells. [in Italian]
📌 13:00–22:00: ICGEB Stand, Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste, science lab activities for the public.
📌 14:30–15:30: ICGEB Trieste. Students from European universities participating in the Trieste Next International Academy will be hosted for a personalised visit to the ICGEB laboratories and facilities.
Saturday, 27 September
📌 09:00–22:00: ICGEB Stand,, Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste, science lab activities for the public. Including, in the afternoon, a Virtual Reality experience “Fascinating Journey into the Human Cell“.
📌 21:00: Teatro Miela, Trieste. “Al confine tra pelle e cuore – le emozioni della scienza nella lotta contro il cancro” – a theatre production, presented by ICGEB for GO!2025 [event in Italian with live sign language interpretation]

Sunday 28 September
📌 10:00-20:00: ICGEB Stand,. Piazza Unità d’Italia, Trieste. The public will be invited to participate in hands-on activities involving fluorescence microscopy.
Through fluorescence microscopy, visitors will discover structures that are normally invisible under a standard optical microscope, such as bacteria, tissues, and cellular components.
