Funded under subcontract of a POR-FESR 2014-2020 programme. The project was awarded to the Biogas Progetti srl and is managed by Industrial Biotechnology Group at ICGEB, headed by Giuliano Degrassi.
The project received 59.8k Euro funding and is led by Biogas Progetti srl. The project aims to optimise the use of biomasses, including organic industrial waste, with high energy potential in the biogas production obtained by the application of anaerobic fermentation technologies. In particular, the project focuses on those biomasses with a high content of cellulose, hemi-cellulose, pectin, keratin, lipids, etc. that at present do not find a satisfactory use in the production of biogas due to the limited degradation capacity of these substances by methanogenic bacteria.
The final aim will be twofold: (i) to facilitate the process of energy extraction during the anaerobic digestion of biomasses already commonly used and (ii) to make possible the digestion of waste biomass currently not used because of the reticence to the degradation and the presence of inhibitors, transforming their management from problem to resource.
Therefore, using genetic engineering and biotechnology, heterologous expression systems will be developed for the production of enzymes to be used in biomass pre-treatment processes.
