Potential Strains of Phototrophic Microorganisms in Biotechnology: Advances and Applications in Biofuels

Host: S. Piazza

Abstract
Phototrophic microorganisms, including cyanobacteria and microalgae, represent promising biological resources for the development of sustainable biofuel technologies and environmental biotechnology. Their ability to convert solar energy and carbon dioxide into valuable biomolecules makes them attractive candidates for renewable energy production and bioremediation applications.

This seminar will present recent advances in the isolation, screening, and biotechnological characterization of phototrophic microorganisms with potential applications in biohydrogen and biofuel production. Special attention will be given to cyanobacterial strains capable of wastewater treatment, carbon dioxide utilization, and hydrogen generation under laboratory conditions. The presentation will also discuss studies on hydrogen metabolism in cyanobacteria and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, including investigations of different cultivation strategies and metabolic pathways related to hydrogen production.

In addition, recent metagenomic and metatranscriptomic studies of extreme ecosystems in Kazakhstan will be presented, highlighting microbial diversity, functional metabolic pathways, and genes associated with stress tolerance, hydrogen metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, and biomass conversion. These findings demonstrate the significant biotechnological potential of phototrophic microorganisms for the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable bioenergy systems.
