The ICGEB Regulatory Science Group completes collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on Synthetic Biology Policy Development.
Collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to support the development of a new policy on synthetic biology in relation to nature conservation, has been successfully completed by the ICGEB Regulatory Science Group. The Group played a key role as trainers and facilitators, supporting both the IUCN Citizens’ Assembly on Synthetic Biology in relation to Nature Conservation, as part of the inclusive and participatory process for policy development, and facilitating the policy drafting process by the IUCN Policy Development Working Group.
Through this initiative, the Group developed and conducted targeted training workshops, drafted a detailed briefing document on synthetic biology in relation to nature conservation, and facilitated key inclusive discussions for the IUCN Policy Development Working Group to incorporate diverse perspectives into the policy framework. This collaboration underscores the Group’s commitment to empowering ICGEB stakeholders and others through science-informed, inclusive and participatory policy development.
The final draft of the policy on synthetic biology in relation to nature conservation is to be considered for adoption at the upcoming IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2025, marking a significant step forward in IUCN’s approach to managing emerging biotechnologies in relation to conservation.
