Biosecurity in the age of Synthetic Biology with a focus on Biomedical Applications
Hosts: W. Craig and F. Moronta
Synthetic biology holds great promise for advancing medicine, from personalized therapies to novel diagnostics and vaccines. However, the rapid progress in this field also raises critical biosecurity concerns, such as the potential for dual-use research, accidental release of engineered organisms, and bioterrorism. We will discuss the importance of balancing innovation and safety. Furthermore, we will review strategies for mitigating these risks, including the development of international guidelines, risk assessment and oversight frameworks, laboratory containment practices, and the promotion of a culture of responsibility within the scientific community.
