Ambivalent role of HIF-1 in myocardial ischemia reperfusion

Abstract
Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 (HIF-1) plays a central role in the response to myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. Depending on the duration and severity of hypoxia, HIF-1 can be either protective or detrimental to the heart. For the past 15 years, our work has highlighted this dual role, showing that fine-tuned modulation of HIF-1 is crucial to improve post-myocardial infarction recovery. Better understanding its regulation could serve as a “hypoxia rheostat” to optimize patient care after myocardial infarction. While HIF-1 is also involved in chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer, understanding its ambivalent role could help to develop more integrated strategies to manage these diseases and their associated comorbidities.
