We are pleased to announce that Dr. Dhiraj Kumar, Group Leader of the Cellular Immunology Group at ICGEB New Delhi, has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA)—India’s most prestigious institution dedicated to the advancement of science.
This achievement is a proud moment for the entire ICGEB community, as Dr. Dhiraj Kumar is a true product of the institute. His journey with ICGEB began in 2002 when he joined as a PhD student in the Immunology Group, completing his doctorate in 2007. He then continued his association with ICGEB New Delhi as a Research Scientist, starting his independent research in the year 2010. He was elevated to the position of Group Leader in 2016, a role he continues to serve with distinction.
Recognized Excellence in Research
Dr. Kumar is widely recognized for his cutting-edge research in tuberculosis (TB). His work focuses on:
• Host-pathogen interactions during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection
• Innate immune responses
• Mechanisms of inflammation
His research contributions have not deepened our scientific understanding of TB pathogenesis but have are also providing potential pathways for therapeutic interventions.
In recognition of his impactful research, Dr. Kumar has previously been:
• Awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Biological Sciences
• Named a Wellcome-DBT India Alliance Senior Fellow in 2018
