Bioinformatics challenges in data integration
Host: L. Banks
Silvano Piazza, obtained his Degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Trieste and his Phd in Functional Genomics at SISSA. After a period of training at Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, he started his Bioinformatics group at the National Laboratory of the Italian Biotecnology Consortium. Finally, since 2016 he supervises the CIBIO Core Bioinformatics Facility.
His research activity is extensively focused on interpreting High-throughput data to discover molecular patterns, both in normal biological processes and in disease states. In fact, his research unit together with external collaborators (coming from both Italian and international institutions), has demonstrated that the synergistic use of genomic data, biological experiments and bioinformatics analysis might not only further the understanding of the processes involved in several diseases and in particular in cancer progression, but also provide lists of molecules with the potential to be incorporated in clinical settings. Nevertheless, with the massive amount, diversity, and availability of genomic datasets, bioinformatics research faces the challenge to integrate all these sources of information
