Workshop on epidemiological surveillance capacity to address COVID-19 and other epidemics

ICGEB Trieste and Nicolae Testemitanu State University have organised a 3-day workshop to strengthen the surveillance capacity to address COVID-19 and other epidemics in Moldova. The workshop will take place online from Tuesday 21 to Thursday 23 September 2021.

The Molecular Virology Group at ICGEB Trieste, and the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova, are working together to enhance the Moldovan research capacities in the fight against COVID-19. The ultimate goal is to establish a permanent infrastructure for the surveillance of coronaviruses and other human viruses. The initiative is the result of the cooperation between Italy and the Republic of Moldova and is supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, Italy.

The 3-day professional training workshop will be held online in the afternoons, with experts in the field of molecular virology. The focus on Tuesday 21 September will be “Public Health Management of viruses”, on Wednesday 22, “Diagnosis and surveillance of the virus”, and on Thursday 23, “Vaccine and therapy”. Thanks to this initiative participants would acquire new skills in molecular virology and epidemiology.

Moldovan researchers from the Microbiology, Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases Departments, their collaborators and students as well as national health authorities will participate. Through this workshop, ICGEB and Nicolae Testemitanu University aim to improve research capacities in the areas of infectious diseases and health surveillance systems and create the foundations for evidence-based decisions of Moldovan authorities and policy-makers in this area.
