Course “The genomics of tree adaptation to environmental changes”

The goal of this five-day course is to bring together international renowned experts in theoretical and experimental approaches on the ecological genomics of trees in order to identify modern concepts, pitfalls, models and methods that are widely being used or are currently being developed to study climate change genetic adaptation in tree species.


Usefulness and caveats of reduced representation libraries to study adaptation to climate change in trees, Utility of Whole Genome and Exome Sequencing to capture adaptive signatures in trees, Necessity to infer demography and phylogenies of trees from genomic data, Going beyond Association Mapping to study the adaptive potential of trees, On the signatures of natural and anthropogenic selection in trees.

Santiago Gonzalez-Martinez (INRA, Cestas, France), Colin Kelleher (National Botanic Gardens of Ireland, Dublin, Ireland), Jaroslav Klapste (New Zealand Forest Research Institute, Rotorua, New Zealand), and Tanja Pyhäjärvi (University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland)


The course is primarily targeting forest engineers, tree breeders and evolutionary biologists who want to discuss deeper knowledge on state-of-the-art concepts and methods used to investigate the adaptive potential in trees using genomic tools and ecological data as well. In order to enhance discussions during the five-day course, 12 selected participants will give 10 minutes oral sessions while the remaining 13 will be asked to present a poster of their own work.
Admittance to the course is subject to selection and payment of a registration fee.


Participants are expected to cover their own travel and living costs. A limited number of grants, covering fee waive, shared accommodation and local hospitality for the duration of the course, are available to a selected number of nationals of ICGEB Member States. Travel contribution will additionally be available to a number of participants currently residing outside of Colombia, given preference to those selected for oral presentation.
