ICGEB Delegation visits site of proposed Regional Research Centre in China

This week in China, Mauro Giacca, Director-General and Lawrence Banks, ICGEB Scientific Coordinator met with Chinese Officials.

Together with a panel comprising Inder Verma (Salk Institute, USA) and Mariano Garcia-Blanco (University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston TX, USA and Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore), members of the ICGEB Council of Scientific Advisers, they reviewed a proposal to establish an ICGEB Regional Research Centre at the China Medical City CMC in Taizhou.

The Chinese delegation comprised Penghui Xu, Director of International Cooperation Division, China National Centre for Biotechnology Development CNCBD, Chunyun Lu, Secretary of the Party Working Comittee, Yue Wu, Director and Xianci Shi, Deputy Director of the China Medical City, CMC. Also present were representatives from the Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Department and the General Director, Taizhou Science and Technology Bureau.

Taizhou Medical Hi-tech Zone is a rapidly growing and innovative health care and life science park located in one of the most developed areas of China. Initiated in 2005, the CMC project is a national medical hi-tech zone and aims to develop China’s largest and most comprehensive bio-medical industry base. Prof. Mauro Giacca, ICGEB’s Director-General, first visited CMC in February 2017 and in July 2017 a delegation headed by Xianci Shi visited ICGEB Trieste.

The ICGEB RRC proposal will be presented at the sessions of the Council and Board sessions this year.
