It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Deepak Gaur, former Principal Investigator of the Malaria laboratory at ICGEB New Delhi, on 20 May 2021.
Dr. Gaur, a renowned malaria research expert, was a PI in the Malaria Group, ICGEB New Delhi between 2009 and 2014.
In 2014, he received the National Bioscience Award of the Department of Biotechnology, and was also a Ramalingaswami fellow. He served on the Faculty of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, School of Biotechnology.
In 2017, Dr. Gaur received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for his contributions to medical science. His work on discovering a multiprotein adhesion complex on Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite which causes malaria, is known to have potential in the development of a vaccine against the parasite. In November 2020, he joined IAVI as Deputy Country Director for India.
He leaves behind his wife and two sons, to whom all at ICGEB, who remember him with warmth and respect, extend heartfelt condolences.
