Plant Transcription Regulation: ICGEB New Delhi welcomes its newest Group Leader

Dr. Jitendra K. Thakur has recently commenced a new position at ICGEB New Delhi as Group Leader of the Plant Transcription Regulation laboratory.

Jitendra arrives at ICGEB New Delhi following an eleven-year stint as Scientist at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi, where he headed the Plant Mediator Lab. Before joining NIPGR, He worked at IISER-Kolkata as an Assistant Professor and earned his M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology from the University of Delhi South Campus, followed by postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School/MGH Cancer Center, Boston, USA.

His Group focuses on understanding the mechanism of transcriptional regulation of gene expression in plants, with a specific focus on structural and functional aspects of the Mediator complex. Also interested in studying the coordination between epigenetic modulators and Mediator complex, the group will explore purification of antifungal molecules from plants. Jitendra’s work has been published in high impact journals including Nature, Genes & Development, Nucleic Acids Research, Plant Journal and the Journal of Experimental Botany. Some of the publications from his lab have featured in the media.

He has received several awards and fellowships including the Young Scientist Medal, Indian National Science Academy; Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India; the Prof. Archana Sharma Memorial Award, Indian Science Congress, and a Fellowship for Medical Discovery from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. Recently, he has been elected Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India.

Jitendra commenced operations at the New Delhi Component on 15 July this year, and the ICGEB is delighted to have him as part of the international scientific faculty of the Organisation.
