ICGEB Board of Governors – Science Talks

The 25th session of the ICGEB Board will take place in Trieste, Italy this May. Science Talks by Richard Roberts, Nobel laureate and Mariano Garcia-Blanco, members of the ICGEB Council of Scientific Advisers, and Mauro Giacca, ICGEB Director-General will be streamed live on Facebook on Wednesday, 22 May 2019 – from 2.30 p.m.

Rich Roberts, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, 1993, has been a member of the ICGEB Scientific Council between 2005-2015 and is currently serving a second mandate, since 2016.

His talk “The Nobel campaign supporting GMO technology” discusses his support for precision agriculture by spearheading a campaign by Nobel Laureates to counter pseudoscience and policies that counter the use of GMOs, in order to make a real difference to the lives of the poor in this world.

Mariano Garcia-Blanco, Professor and Chair, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Chair in Honor of President Truman G. Blocker Jr., University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, USA and Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases, Duke-NUS Medical School Singapore, has served as member of the ICGEB Council since 2011. His talk will focus on “The love-hate relationship between RNA viruses and their hosts”.

Mauro Giacca, ICGEB Director-General since 2014, will present his latest research – his most recent publication appearing in Nature earlier this month on developing a novel technique to treat cardiac regeneration, with his signature title: “How can you mend a broken heart” (Bee Gees, 1971).

Prof. Giacca completes his mandate in June 2019 to pursue his groundbreaking research at King’s College London, UK. The election for the new Director-General of the Organisation will be decided by the Board at the forthcoming session.
