Lawrence Banks, ICGEB Director-General meets with the South African Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, to confirms the solid commitment of the South Africa Government to the ICGEB.
Meeting Minister Nzimande in Pretoria on 16 January 2020, Lawrence Banks confirmed the shared agenda of the Component and the Ministry to work, in particular, towards highlighting the importance of women in science, and on cancer research in South Africa.
The visit culminates the Director-General’s first trip to the ICGEB South Africa Component this year, to meet with staff, students and scientists to discuss the burgeoning research and outreach activities underway.
The final workshop of the three-year EU STARBIOS2 Project on Structural Transformation to Attain Responsible BioSciences taking place in Cape Town in March, with representatives from the twelve partner states from across Europe, North and South America and South Africa in attendance.
Additional workshops are being run at the Component later in the year, on the Cancer Immunology, and on the challenges and opportunities for the use of biopesticides for Fall armyworm control, responsible for significant yield losses in maize in sub-Saharan Africa over recent years.
