More than 100 COVID-19 research project proposals were submitted in 2020 under the ICGEB CRP Programme call.
From among these, owing to its scientific value and international outlook, the International Italo-Latin America Organization, IILA selected to fund the project entitled: Large scale biobanks from underserved populations to accelerate COVID-19 host genetics studies in Latin America and Oceania”, by Professor Andrés Moreno-Estrada of the “Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional de México”.
This project will investigate important issues related to ethnic minorities who are particularly affected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and who will benefit from the range of information included in the DNA biobanks of the indigenous populations in Latin America, Oceania, and South East Asia, in order to implement suitable public health measures to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic in those regions of the world.
The ICGEB and IILA collaborate in the framework of an agreement signed in 2018 between the two Organisations.
Funding will cover one year of the research project, thanks to the support of the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
