Pretoria, 1 December 2021: The Director General of the South African Department of Science and Technology DSI, Dr. Phil Mjwara, and ICGEB Director-General, Dr. Lawrence Banks, have signed the Operational Agreement to support the implementation of ICGEB Cape Town activities.
The Operational Agreement will support ICGEB Cape Town in implementing the activities charted in its 2021-2025 work programme. The hybrid signing ceremony took place in Pretoria on the first day of Science Forum South Africa 2021, with Dr. Banks participating online from Trieste, Italy.
The programme comprises strategic objectives and targets, promotion of established, and future research activities at the Cape Town Component of ICGEB, as well as a strategy for visibility on the African continent.
Dr. Mjwara stated: “We are pleased to be signing this Agreement with the ICGEB. We look forward to strengthening this wonderful partnership.”

Dr. Banks extended his thanks to the Government of South Africa for their commitment and support for ICGEB since the establishment of its Cape Town component. “ICGEB is a proud partner of South Africa, and through the Cape Town Component, we will continue to work closely with DSI in strengthening our footprint, our activities, and visibility in the country and on the Continent.”
