Following ICGEB Cape Town’s advocacy for STEM and impact in science engagement with school outreach, the Component was invited to participate in Wynberg Girls’ Junior School Science Week Programme.
On Thursday, 7 May 2026, ICGEB Cape Town researchers ran a hands-on Foldscope workshop at Wynberg Girls’ Junior School as part of their Science Week, themed – ‘She questions. She explores. She creates’, promoting women and girls in science.
Bringing the ‘magic’ of the paper microscope to the learners as well as their life sciences teachers, the ICGEB researchers used the Foldscope to spark curiosity about science, as well as encouraging learners to consider a career in STEM. ICGEB also donated Foldscopes to the school, to be used as an educational resource tool within the classroom and outdoors.

ICGEB continues to promote a culture of effective scientific communication and outreach through science for citizens, science education in schools, and participation in Science Festivals, with the Cape Town Component championing science engagement activities in South Africa and across the continent.
