L-R: ICGEB Governor of Algeria, Prof. Ammar Azioune with DG, Dr. Lawrence Banks

ICGEB mission to Algeria

In October 2023, ICGEB was in Algeria to cement relations with its long-standing Member State.

In a series of high-level meetings in both Algiers and Constantine, Director-General (DG), Lawrence Banks, and Chief, External Relations, Marianna Maculan, reinforced the benefits of membership.

Hosted by Dr. Ammar Azioune, ICGEB Governor for Algeria, Director of the “Centre de Recherche en Biotechnology (CRBT) de Constantine” (ICGEB Affiliated Centre), the delegation met with the General Director of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Algeria, Prof. Mohamed Bouhicha (below), also in the presence of Prof. Mohammed Sebaihia, Member of the ICGEB Council of Scientific Advisers, of the University Hassiba Benbouali, Chlef.

The DG was received by H.E. Sir Giovanni Pugliese, Italian Ambassador to Algeria (below left), who emphasised the commitment of the Organisation for scientific research in biotechnology, in which Italy and Algeria partner.

Dr. Banks conducted a three-hour workshop on raising ICGEB awareness and possibilities for collaboration and training in biotechnology, at the CRBT in Constantine with 200 participants in attendance.

The need to connect with our Member States on the ground remains fundamental to ensure the relevance, continuity and impact of our research and actions for capacity building, which is the foundation of our mandate.
