Read about our initiatives to mark this year’s UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
International days are occasions to raise awareness on issues of major concern, to mobilise institutional will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity. Today, to celebrate UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science we outline our activities to raise awareness for gender parity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
This year’s theme: Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 is close to the heart of our operations. We celebrate all scientists who have rallied together to battle the pandemic and to advance the scientific and medical frontiers across the ICGEB constituency.
Further, we would like to ensure that, in the long term, more young girls have access to the opportunities that ICGEB can provide: fellowships, grants and mentoring to support careers. In particular, we are delighted to announce the launch the ICGEB Alumni for Girls in STEM campaign: a capacity-building programme to promote the participation of women in the Life Sciences, by financing actions aimed at making science appealing for young girls in developing countries.
By funding events, such as “Discover Science through the lens of the Foldscope” – as hosted South Africa, and by organising “Science and the City Young” events in ICGEB Member States, we aim to enhance discovery, development, and science dissemination for young girls. Through your donations, the ICGEB will provide Foldscopes, participation, as well as co-funding for these activities.
We take this opportunity to celebrate our #womeninSTEM and all our scientists’ achievements; with your help we can become even more effective in targeting programmes to address gender parity.
