Read about our initiatives to mark this year’s UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
International days are occasions to raise awareness on issues of major concern, to mobilise institutional will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity. To celebrate UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science we outline our activities to raise awareness for gender parity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Further, we would like to ensure that, in the long term, more young girls have access to the opportunities that ICGEB can provide: fellowships, grants and mentoring to support careers. We are delighted to have launched the WE-STAR PhD and Postdoctoral Mobility scheme for women scientists in Africa, and the EMPOWER Fellowships, South-South and Triangular Cooperation programme for women scientists from developing countries.
In February, we also inaugurated the Biotechnology Career Advancement and Re-orientation Programme (BioCARe) Processing and Monitoring Unit (PMU) at ICGEB, New Delhi; a special programme of the DBT, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India with a vision to promote women in science. The scheme provides fellowship and grant support to the research and development projects from women scientists and is targeted towards their career development. The programme is meant for women researchers, who are not under regular employment and those desirous of coming back to the mainstream research after a break.
We take this opportunity to celebrate our women in science and all their achievements; with your help we can become even more effective in targeting programmes to address gender parity.
