Jorge Chediek, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and Lawrence Banks, ICGEB Director-General today signed the Memorandum of Understanding to launch joint collaboration promoting South-South and triangular cooperation in the field of the science, technology, and innovation.
The ICGEB today signed an MoU with the UNOSSC, an office established by the General Assembly of the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, to mark the establishment of a growing partnership to support sustainable development for the Global South.
Speaking from ICGEB Headquarters, Lawrence Banks stated: “in this moment of global crisis, the need for South-South and Triangular Scientific Cooperation has never been greater. ICGEB has responded with alacrity and fortitude to this crisis and we work to ensure that the global south is not forgotten – hence our efforts to directly provide rapid assistance to our constituency with diagnostics, surveillance, and capacity enhancement for handling the Covid19 crisis.
He added, “together with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation we can, without doubt, make a real impact across the Global South and capitalise upon the wonderful platforms that your Organisation has developed such as the South-South Galaxy and your flagship publication of Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development.”
“I look forward to being able to expand our joint activities by promoting programmes for reversing brain drain in the Global South, enhancing South-South Cooperation and exchange and promoting peace and security through science diplomacy.”
In his concluding statement, Dr. Banks referred to the Joint Editorial published by the two Organisations and affirmed that “this collaboration is a perfect example of the steps that we need to take to ensure that the poorer parts of the world are not forgotten. I look forward with excitement and enthusiasm to working closely to ensure that we can fulfill our noble goals of Sustainable Development for the Global South.”
