Kenya set to host ICGEB Regional Research Centre

A delegation headed by Prof. Ramesh Sonti, Director ICGEB New Delhi, visits Egerton University to further establish the Regional Research Centre for East Africa.

In a recent visit to the Regional Research Centre (RRC) that is nearing completion, the Director of ICGEB New Delhi, Prof. Ramesh Venkata Sonti and Egerton University Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage met to discuss fostering cutting-edge research in genetic bio-fortification, development of molecular diagnostic tools and their applications, and Bioprospecting for bio-pesticides and bioactive compounds.

The second ICGEB Regional Research Centre (RRC) is located in the main campus of Egerton University in Njoro Sub-County, in Kenya. Three years after the establishment of the first ICGEB RRC in China, this Centre is envisaged to play a key role in serving Kenya and the East Africa region in the fields of food safety, molecular plant breeding, plant pathology and entomology. The facility will encompass four high-tech laboratories along with office spaces.

Earlier, in 2022, an International Review Committee, hosted by Prof Walter Oyawa (Director General of the Kenyan National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation – NACOSTI), had visited the Universities shortlisted to host the RRC.

The members included Prof. Mariano Garcia-Blanco, former ICGEB Council of Scientific Advisers member, Dr. Dinakar Salunke, former Director of ICGEB New Delhi, Dr Luiz Zerbini, Director of ICGEB Cape Town, Dr. Vittorio Venturi, ICGEB Scientific Coordinator, Prof. Alice Mutungi, Chair, National Scientific and Ethics Committee and Dean, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Kenya Methodist University, Dr. Catherine O. Taracha, Director Biotechnology Centre, KALRO, Kenya, and Dr. Frank Sawanga Ndakala, Ministry of Education, Kenya.
