The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), established in 1983, is an international, intergovernmental Organisation conceived as a Centre of excellence for research and training with special regard to the needs of the developing world. The Centre conducts innovative research in life sciences and strengthens the research capability of its over 66 Member States through training, funding programs and advisory services. Located in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa), and in collaboration with over 40 Affiliated Centres worldwide, the three ICGEB Laboratories provide a scientific and educational environment of the highest international standards.
The ICGEB invites applications for the position of Director of its Component in New Delhi. The New Delhi Component was established in 1988 to provide a hub for advanced research and training and to address critical problems of the developing world in the fields of health and agriculture through the application of genetic engineering and biotechnology.
Current research Groups focus on Molecular Medicine, Plant Biology and Integrative Biology covering a wide range of areas including malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, chikungunya, COVID-19 and other emerging infections, plant molecular biology, agricultural biotechnology, crop improvement, biotic and abiotic stresses, the development of recombinant gene products, structural and computational biology, synthetic biology, and biofuels.
The Director of ICGEB New Delhi will be of international scientific standing with extensive experience in performing top-class science in diverse international environments, and will combine academic excellence, impeccable reputation, demonstrated institutional leadership and management expertise, and close familiarity with India’s biotechnology context and academic programmes, with a proven capacity to network across the international stakeholder community, to identify new and upcoming areas of research within the mandate of ICGEB, and to raise additional funds.
An active, well-funded, personal research programme pursued in one of the focus areas of ICGEB is also essential. The incumbent will establish effective interactions with governments of ICGEB Member States, other international institutions, and the scientific community worldwide while demonstrating experience in translating scientific research into innovation and commercialisation.
The post is full-time and will be offered as a 5-year contract, renewable subject to performance, and will foresee an attractive salary package within the UN Common System at a level commensurate with the incumbent’s qualifications and experience, including participation in an international pension fund and health insurance.
