Applications of CRISPR and ART Technologies to Laboratory Mice

The course will be taught in two modules: theoretical and practical. In each issue of the module theorical, of 35 – 40 minutes presentation followed by 5 – 10 minutes for discussion, allowing international participants (35) to follow via zoom. The practical sessions will be attended only by a selected group of participants (14) and will be provided of practical experience that consists in demonstrations and hands-on sessions to learn the techniques and methods. Laboratory protocols will be given to the participants as a handbook. Students will also present thier own projects (15 min plus 5 min discussion) in order to discuss with leading experts in the field.

Topics

Animals laboratory or Scientific Purposes; Animal Ethics – Moral Concepts & Ethical Principles. Genome modification In animals: past, present and future. Applications of CRISPR system in rodents; Alternative CRISPR applications; Basic CRISPR design; Genotyping strategies, analysis and interpretation of results; Design of CRISPR. Microinjection and electroporation of embryos, a practical approach; Phenotyping; Functional validation of GE mouse models. Basic & Applied Biology, Breeding Programs; Beyond breeding – ARTs for Colony Management. Basis of In Vitro Fertilization; Basis of embryo and sperm cryopreservation.

Participants

Degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Biotechnology, Veterinary); Basic knowledge of molecular biology and genetics; Lab skills (PCR, cloning, cell culture); Experience with laboratory mice, ethics; Contact with laboratory mice job; Knowledge of scientific English; Strong interest in genetic editing applications; The course will be in presence and virtual modalities; For the participants attending in person, the course will have a cost of €160; For the participants attending on-line the course will cost €50.

Funding

The participants must have the following: Degree in Life Sciences (Biology, Biotechnology, Veterinary); Basic knowledge of molecular biology and genetics; Lab skills (PCR, cloning, cell culture); Experience with laboratory mice, ethics, and have a permanent contact with laboratory mice job; Knowledge of scientific English.

Participants must be currently conducting research developing gene-editing applications. Those who need to implement the techniques learned in their daily research. 19 scholarships covering accommodation and living expenses are available for students/young researchers from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) of ICGEB member states, who will also be exempt from the registration fee.
