Microbiome research has explosed recently and one question that needs to be addressed is how can this data and approach be used for practical solutions for a more sustainable agriculture.

The course will provide knowledge on the generation and analysis of plant microbiome data. Lectures will describe the pivotal role of plant-associated bacteria on plant health and productivity and the “state of the art” in this field, together with the description of different approaches to move from the laboratory data to practical applications in agriculture.

Topics

Most lectures will be under the following general topics:

  • The plant microbiome: structure and function
  • The plant microbiome and sustainable agriculture

The practical component will cover approaches and methodologies to plant microbiome studies, including:

  • DNA isolation
  • 16S amplicon library construction
  • OTU table analysis
  • Identification of beneficial versus pathogenic microorganisms
