At the present time, genetic diagnosis and human genetics research increasingly rely on high-throughput sequencing technologies to identify, characterize, and understand how genetic variants contribute to the aetiology of diseases. In this context, variant interpretation operates within an integrative and interdisciplinary framework that requires a strong grasp of bioinformatics tools and methods. The proliferative utilisation of bioinformatics tools in medical genomics has, however, led to the suboptimal or at times, incorrect use of these tools, particularly by non-specialists. To address this challenge, we propose this training designed to equip participants with the skills needed to effectively use bioinformatics tools for variant interpretation in both clinical genomics. The training will cover the core set of tools used in clinical bioinformatics and explain how they interact to support robust and rational variant interpretation. Participants will also gain a solid understanding of the common data formats and key concepts that underpin clinical bioinformatics, laying the foundation for their journey into applied human genomics. Through a combination of theoretical and hands-on practical sessions, we will also highlight the powerful synergy between computational analysis and genetic expertise in the interpretation of genomic data.
Topics
Clinical Bioinformatics; Variant interpretation; Integrative analysis; Human genomics.
Participants
This training targets medical geneticists, clinical staff involved in genomic diagnostics, and researchers in human genomics. It is designed for participants working with or planning to analyze NGS data. A basic understanding of next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics concepts is expected. Hands-on bioinformatics experience is not required but familiarity with core principles is recommended. Participants are expected to bring their own laptops (i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor or better, at least 8 GB of RAM, and at least 20 GB of free storage).
Funding
A limited number of grants covering accommodation will be provided to selected participants who are ICGEB Member states nationals, residing outside of Tunisia.
