Leading from the first workshop on practical training in biomanufacturing in December 2022, ICGEB hosted a Korean delegation to discuss further opportunities for collaboration.
On 8 June 2023, the ICGEB welcomed a Korean delegation comprising representatives from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the International Vaccine Institute, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute and Vaxdigm, to discuss products and processes as well as training programmes developed by the ICGEB Biotechnology Development Unit (BDU), headed by Dr. Natasa Skoko.
In December 2022, Dr. Skoko coordinated a two-week practical workshop at ICGEB headquarters in Trieste, in collaboration with the World Health Organization WHO. Participants from Low and Middle Income countries (LMICs) attended the sessions, which comprised a comprehensive coverage of QMS and GMP standards as well as guidelines and practices pivotal to the establishment of biomanufacturing. The workshop aimed to help trainees understand the basic principles, approaches and terminology necessary to start practical training in laboratories.

The workshop was a successful pilot leading to further meetings with WHO to finalise a collaboration agreement and to bring forward a complete, virtual development plan for training.
