The role of Clinical Microbiology and Virology in Arboviral and Other Infectious Diseases Management

Abstract
Infectious Diseases are a global Public Health concern, especially
because their are caused by pathogens that can spread and
affect a growing number of individuals; in addition, rapid genetic
evolution confers to aetiological agents the ability to escape the
hosts’ countermeasures, such as immune response, vaccines and
treatments.
Clinical Mcirbiology and Virology Laboratories have an essentials
role in Infetious Diseases management, implementing direct and
indirect assays to detect pathogens, their genomes or antigens, as
well as production of specific antibodies. Moreover, the increasing
availabilty of sequencing resources and capacities has paved the
way to large epidemiological investigations and mutations analyses
to detect diffusion of relevant mutations (i.e.: escape mutants, drugs
resistance).
Among all, Arboviruses are growing in importance, due to the more
frequent detection of authoctonous outbreaks in non-endemic
areas and larger epidemics in endemic ones. These occurrences join
with increasing diffusion of High Risk pathogens, such as Ebolavirus,
Rift Valley virus or Crimean-Congo virus, that claim for attention and
reliable and rapid responses.
