Decoding and Recoding Lung Stem-Niche Communication in Regeneration

Abstract
Ahmad Nabhan trained at Stanford (PhD w/ Mark Krasnow) and Genentech (Postdoc w/Vishva Dixit) before joining UC Berkeley as an Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology in 2025. His PhD in Mark Krasnow’s lab revealed that alveolar stem cell identity is maintained by Wnt signaling from a single niche fibroblast (Nabhan, Science 2018). ,He co-led the first molecular atlas of the human lung across 75,000 single cells (Travaglini* & Nabhan*, Nature 2020) and led lung, kidney, and spleen analysis for the Tabula Muris pan-tissue mouse atlas (Tabula Muris Consortium, Nature 2018, 2020). His postdoctoral at Genentech work culminated in the Wnt Code hypothesis and the first receptor-selective stimulation of alveolar regeneration (Nabhan, Cell 2023), followed by the first functional genomic platform for dissecting alveolar stem cell–niche interactions (Nabhan, PNAS 2026). His lab focuses in understand how cellular communication shapes organ function and regeneration.
