Species abbreviations

The members of adrenodoxin family are soluble [Fe2S2] iron-sulphur proteins that act as single electron carriers. In mitochondrial monooxygenase systems, adrenodoxin transfers an electron from NADPH:adrenodoxin reductase to membrane-bound P450. In bacteria, putidaredoxin and terpredoxin serve as electron carriers between corresponding NADH-dependent ferredoxin reductases and soluble P450.

In a few bacterial P450-containing systems, the transfer of electrons from flavoprotein reductase to P450 is mediated by [Fe3S4] ferredoxins. Despite functional similarity of such ferredoxins to the adrenodoxin family, they do not share sequence similarity. On the other hand, [Fe3S4] proteins seem to be similar to some mono-[Fe4S4] cluster ferredoxins, but lack a fourth cysteine residue conserved in [Fe4S4] ferredoxins.
