Species abbreviations

Mitochondrial (1) and most bacterial P450-containing systems (2) have three components: an FAD-containing flavoprotein (NADPH or NADH-dependent reductase), an iron-sulphur protein, and P450.

   NADPH -->  adrenodoxin reductase  -->  adrenodoxin  --> P450    (1)
    NADH -->  ferredoxin  reductase  -->  ferredoxin   --> P450    (2)
It was shown that in microsomal P450-containing systems cytochrome b5 can serve as electron donor for P450s:
    NADH --> cytochrome b5 reductase --> cytochrome b5 --> P450    (3) 
Despite functional similarities, reductase components of redox chains (1, 2, 3) are not homologous. Bacterial P450-specific ferredoxin reductases belong to FAD-dependent pyridine nucleotide reductase family, whereas cytochrome b5 reductase belongs to flavoprotein pyridine nucleotide cytochrome reductase family. Adrenodoxin reductase shows no sequence similarity with other known ferredoxin reductases over the entire length of sequence.
