The ICGEB Biosafety Outstation at Ca' Tron was created thanks to the generous financial support of the Fondazione Cassamarca. This has made it possible for the ICGEB to carry out laboratory research on GMO biosafety, in addition to its long-standing training and communication activities in GMO biosafety.

RESEARCH, TRAINING AND COMMUNICATION ACTIVITIES OF THE OUTSTATION
The two principal activities carried out at the Outstation are research and training concerning the biosafety of transgenic plants and plant pathogens. It also plays an active role in communication in the area of GMO biosafety research.
Research
The Outstation is a fully equipped laboratory for studying genetically modified plants and micro-organisms. The main aim of the work done here corresponds to one of the central aims of the ICGEB as a whole: to carry out first class fundamental research that is or will be of importance for biotechnology in the developing world. Research a the Outstation focuses on biosafety questions concerning pathogen-resistant transgenic plants. However, this also includes creating resistant transgenic plants in which the transgenes are designed to minimize any potential epidemiological or environmental risk.

Training
The ICGEB Biosafety Unit at ICGEB Trieste has long-standing experience in providing theoretical training in the area of GMO biosafety, and this activity is being expanded at Ca' Tron, where dedicated facilities are available. In addition, a series of informal seminars is also proposed, which will serve as brainstorming sessions in specific research areas pertinent to GMO biosafety. These would include questions of immediate concern for GMOs already in or close to the commercial release stage.
Dissemination of Information regarding GMO Biosafety
The efforts of the Biosafety Unit for the dissemination of information on GMO biosafety are potentiated by the Biosafety Outstation, which hosts the editorial office of "Environmental Biosafety Research", an international multidisciplinary journal entirely devoted to research on GMO Biosafety, which is the official journal of the International Society for Biosafety Research (ISBR).
