The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations Agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Educational, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal: to build peace in the minds of men.
The Global Biotechnology Forum
The Global Biotechnology Forum covered several fields of biotechnology, such as bioindustries, technology transfer, financing and public-private partnership, intellectual property rights, biosafety, biodiversity, capacity building, networks and inter-agency cooperation. For most of these issues follow-up actions were proposed. UNESCO presented a policy statement, delivered by the Director of the UNESCO Santiago office on behalf of the Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences.
Genetically Modified Organisms - a teaching kit
The teaching tool on Genetically modified organisms is being developed with the objective to empower teachers to prepare and implement their lessons on the subject of GMOs. It has the ultimate goal to prepare youth to understand new (technological) challenges on the 21st century in order to make informed decisions as consumers as well as democratic citizens.
International Bioethics Committee (IBC)
The IBC was created in 1993, to respond to the major concerns raised by progress in the life and health sciences, in particular genetics and biotechnology. Ethical and legal issues addressed include those related to genetic screening and testing, gene therapy, genetic counselling, neurosciences, access to experimental treatment, and genetically modified novel food.
