Education and Training
Fellowships - Statistics
Since the programme's inception a total of 650 Fellowships at both pre- and post-doctoral levels have been awarded to fellows originating from over 50 ICGEB Member States and Signatory Countries (Figures 1-3). A detailed list of the fellowships funded in 2008 and 2009 is available upon request.
Post-doctoral fellows are trained for an average of two years, during which they actively participate in the research projects of the ICGEB Components as well as in those of the ICGEB Outstation in Monterotondo (Rome).
The Pre-doctoral fellowship programme provides three to four years stipend to those students aiming to obtain an internationally recognized PhD degree. The PhD programme run by ICGEB is expected to provide graduate students with all the necessary means to understand a scientific investigation in the field of life sciences, develop independent thought and critical view, personal responsibility and decision making.
To date 130 students have completed their PhD studies at ICGEB and moved on to prestigious institutions at home or abroad as postdoctoral fellows or staff members. Most of these completed their degree with first author publications in high impact international peer review journals such as Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular Cell, Embo Reports, etc. This is in itself the best indication of the quality of the PhD programme.
Following the establishment of the Flexible Fellowship Programme in 2004, 8 Sandwich PhD fellowships have been awarded to students wishing to carry out part of their experimental research studies at the ICGEB laboratories in the framework of jointly agreed collaboration. Thirty-one short-term fellowships have been awarded to selected scientists contributing to widening the knowledge of new techniques within the ICGEB constituency.
