The course is now underway with the arrival of the international resource persons and selected participants from different countries from 10th August 2014.

The Opening Ceremony of the workshop was formally held on 11th August 2014 by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita. The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria was ably represented by the Deputy Head of Mission, Nicola Bazzani who gave a goodwill message on behalf of the Italian Government. Also in attendance were other partners such as the NEPAD-African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE). Lectures commenced immediately after the opening ceremony.

 
The course is designed to equip participants with the understanding and skills to carry out and initiate in vitro regeneration in crops and to emphasise the importance of tissue culture as a pre-requisite to the application of plant biotechnology in crop genetic improvement.
 
Topics will include an introduction to plant tissue culture, experimental techniques, hands-on practical sessions, an introduction to bioinformatics application in plant genetic engineering, evaluation of international biosafety laws.
 


Nationals of ICGEB Member States are eligible to attend this event on an ICGEB grant to cover accommodation (twin share) and local hospitality for the duration of the course. Travel is NOT funded.
