Zimbabwe Minister for Science and Technology visits ICGEB Cape Town

The Ministerial Delegation, headed by Hon. Prof. Henri Dzinotyiweyi visits the Component of ICGEB Cape Town on 16 March 2012.

Accompanied by senior officials from the Ministries of Science and Technology of Zimbabwe and South Africa, Minister Dzinotyiwyi toured the facilities and laboratories of the Component.

In a welcome address Prof. Parker, ICGEB Cape Town Director, presented an overview of the activities and the funding instruments of the ICGEB, outlining the benefits to Member countries.  He also presented the research activities, student enrolment, personnel, publication track record, education and training activities at the Cape Town Component. Zimbabwe is not yet a member of the ICGEB and the visit was hailed as an opportunity to advise the Minister on the membership benefits.

In particular, Profs. Brombacher and Zerbini presented an overview of the Communicable and Non-Communicable disease research programmes of the Cape Town Component.

Minister Dzinotyiweyi, a mathematician and former Dean of Science at the University of Zimbabwe was visibly impressed with the high standard of research, equipment and the rich diversity of the students at the Component. He has undertaken to kick start the process of Zimbabwe’s membership to the ICGEB upon his return to Zimbabwe.

Ministerial delegations from United Republic of Tanzania, Angola and the NEPAD are scheduled to visit the ICGEB Cape Town Component in the next few weeks.
