China Medical City, Taizhou at ICGEB Trieste to develop Regional Research Centre proposal

The China Medical City, CMC is a rapidly growing and innovative health care and life science park located in Taizhou, one of the most developed areas of China. Initiated in 2005, the CMC project is a national medical hi-tech zone and aims to develop China's largest and most comprehensive bio-medical industry base. Prof. Mauro Giacca, ICGEB's Director-General, first visited CMC in February 2017.

In line with ICGEB's activities encompassing cutting-edge scientific research, promotion of advanced education and training through fellowships and meetings, together with the provision of research grants and technology transfer to industry, CMC and ICGEB share many common goals. In particular, discussions focused on expanding the Health Bioeconomy through R&D in the areas of viral infections, point of care diagnostics and the development of biotherapeutics for degenerative diseases.

Over the next few months, the objectives, governance, structure and specific research activities of the nascent ICGEB Regional Resaerch Centre (RRC) will be defined, with an emphasis on activities that will have a broad impact in areas of concern in China. It is expected that a dossier will be presented to the ICGEB Board of Governors for their approval for the establishment of the RRC in early 2018.
