Indian industrial partners complete one-month's training in ICGEB Biotech Development Unit

The Biotechnology Development Unit (BDU) has just successfully completed one month's training by four industrial partner employees from India.

Natasa Skoko, Head of the BD Unit says that this training has been conducted for the production of Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (GCSF) and Pegylated GCSF activities in bioprocessing, including upstream and downstream operations and quality control procedures, in accordance with the guidelines of the European Pharmacopoeia. This is another example of the way in which the  BDU helps industrial partners to develop safe biosimilars according to internationally acceptable quality control standards.

The BDU provides support to ICGEB Member States through global harmonisation of quality specifications for biosimilars. "Our primary motivation", states Natasa Skoko "is making a significant impact on the affordability and availability of these important biologic medicines on developing markets.

The development of biosimilars represents a fast-growing area in the biopharmaceutical industry with enormous opportunities from the health and from the political economic perspective. works to improve access to affordable biosimilars, and synergistic drug development, involving biological drugs produced from recombinant DNA techniques for health benefits, for e.g. insulin (which has been on the market for >30 years but to which access is still difficult the world over).

The Unit focuses on reducing prices and providing a better health perspective through the production of biosimilars to take the place of the small number of pharmaceuticals that account for a large percentage of health costs in most countries.
