ICGEB at the Palais des Nations, United Nations, Geneva for BWC discussions

The Meeting of Experts on Cooperation and Assistance, with Particular Focus on Strengthening Cooperation and Assistance under Article X of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) took place this week at the United Nations in Geneva from 7-8 August 2018.

The ICGEB has been granted Observer status at the Meeting, with the ICGEB delegate, Alessandro Marcello, Group Leader Molecular Virology, delivering a statement on the activities of the Organisation, particularly related to infectious diseases.

The presentation (available on the UN Web site) was well received by the audience and raised questions on the Programmes of the Centre in training, in supporting meetings and in granting funds for research projects in the field of infectious diseases as well as for capacity building in diagnostics and surveillance.

The Chair of the meeting, Ambassador Almojuela of The Philippines, specifically asked about the development of point of care devices for the detection of pathogens, which are considered highly for first line containment of epidemic threats. Further involvement of the Centre in the BWC activities has been considered, in view of the emphasis on Science and Technology of the BWC Meetings (#BWCMX).
