ICGEB Open Day 2010

Come and experience Science and Research with us!

On Saturday 12 June, 300 people from the local communities were granted access to the ICGEB laboratories in Trieste. Thank you to all our "operators" who ensured that the day was a huge success.

Following a brief general introduction on the ICGEB's activities, visitors are shown how a molecular biology laboratory is organized and how work is undertaken therein; the principal methodologies of genetic engineering are described. Normal and tumour cell cultures can be viewed under the microscope, the growth and intercommunication of bacteria in different cell cultures is shown and described. Cells colored with fluorescent substances to identify their different composition are shown, as are instruments used in  separating cells from blood and in the analysis of the structure of proteins. It is also possible to observe normal and genetically modified fruit flies (Drosophila) under the microscope, as specialised researchers explain how these can be used to understand the molecular mechanisms at the base of neurological disorders.

We look forward to being able to accommodate even greater numbers in future to meet the huge demand to see our laboratories and learn about our mission.
