ICGEB New Delhi receives funding under India-UK multi-institutional partnership

Shams Yazdani, Group Leader, Microbial Engineering lab, ICGEB New Delhi, is the Indian lead partner in a project to reduce industrial waste from sugarcane processing.

Scientists and businesses from the UK and India are joining forces to combat global challenges through two new collaborative research and development programmes. The two programmes, in total worth over £15 million, aim to tackle the reduction and repurposing of industrial waste and improve and increase pulse and oilseed crop productivity.

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and Innovate UK, all part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and the Department for Biotechnology (DBT) India are co-investing in two new collaborative UK-India research programmes which focus on key socio-economic challenges relevant to international development. Both programmes are being delivered through the Newton-Bhabha Fund.

The ICGEB is part of the multi-intuitional partnership with UK institutes and companies, having secured a joint BBSRC-DBT funding of 3.5 Million pounds.

"Our project", says Shams Yazdani, "which is led by the ICGEB in India and University of York in the UK, is aimed at reducing industrial waste from sugarcane processing in India; we intend to utilise the lignocellulosic waste of sugarcane from a factory in India in collaboration with Natems Sugar Pvt Ltd and produce citric acid. This academia-industry collaboration will use advanced synthetic and systems biology applications to develop effective enzymes and fungal strains for the bioconversion. The project has been funded under the Newton-Bhabha Fund Industrial Waste Challenge.
