David Smith new Director General of Rudjer Boskovic Institute



In March 2018, David Matthew Smith assumed the position of the Director General of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (RBI) in Zagreb. His term at the helm of the RBI, the largest and most prominent scientific institution in Croatia, an ICGEB Affiliated Centre, is foreseen for a period of 4 years.

Since March 2016 he has been the Divisional Head and Senior Scientist at the Division of Physical Chemistry at RBI. Besides his regular scientific work at RBI, Dr. Smith was, until recently, a Visiting Professor at the Excellence Cluster: “Engineering of Advanced Materials” (EAM) and the Centre for Computational Chemistry (CCC) at the Friedrich – Alexander - University (FAU) of Erlangen - Nuremberg, Germany.

For his work, Dr. Smith has received numerous Croatian and international awards, scholarships and donations, with emphasis on two received scholarships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, as well as the postdoctoral specialisation in Munich from 2001 to 2004.

In his scientific career as a computational chemist, Dr. Smith has published 55 scientific articles in journals listed in Web of Science (WoS), 40 of which were in Q1 journals (IF2015, JCR), with a cumulative impact factor (IF2015, JCR) of almost 400. His articles have been cited over 1375 times, with an associated H-index of 19.

Originating from Australia, Dr Smith is now a naturalised Croatian citizen. He started his scientific career at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra where he excelled and was awarded first class honours [BSc(Hons)] in Chemistry, as well as a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Bachelor of Economics (BEc).

Since the beginning of his career at the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in 2004, he has advanced through all professional levels, from postdoctoral specialisation and research associate to senior scientist, including the positions of Group leader of the Group for Quantum Organic Chemistry (GQOC), Assistant Director for international cooperation and projects, Divisional Head and, finally, Director General.
