International Symposium on Biotech in Canberra, Australia

On 16 September 2015, speakers from Australia, Bangladesh, France, India, Italy and the USA will be gathering for a one day International Symposium to be held in Canberra, Australia on science and technology for development.

Science and technology and, in particular, biotechnology, are essential tools to foster economic, industrial and social development globally. Since 1987, this has been the focus of the ICGEB, an intergovernmental organization operating with the United Nations common system with headquarters in Italy and seats in India and South Africa, established as a centre of research and training to benefit the developing world.

Based on existing collaboration between Australian scientific institutes and the ICGEB, the symposium provides an opportunity to bring together stakeholders within Australia and ICGEB scientists, aimed at defining common strategies and establishing paths for future joint intiatives between the Australian Government and the ICGEB.

In particular, topics will include:

  • Science for global development
  • Regulatory aspects of agricultural biotechnology
  • Frontier research on malaria
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Synthetic biology and biofuels
  • International cooperation networks for biotechnology
